5Professionals and Novices alike.....Nov 05, 2009
I have been cooking for 15 years. I have been cooking professionally for 8 years. I went to Johnson & Wales for 4 years. I love this book. I can honestly say I use it almost every day for my residences. I've made about 20 of the cookies in this books and all of them have come out amazing! I find it very comprehensive and if you read it and actually know some basic techniques it is a great book. Plus, although a little froo froo for me, the "gifting" ideas at the back of the book are neat and it also gives you ideas on equipment you should have. And with Ebay and other culinary supply stores you should be able to find them cheaply. Hope this helps! A+ book!

5Excellent assortmentNov 01, 2009
I have to say that Martha Stewart (& Co) do things well. The book is lovely to look at and well laid out; the photographs are excellent; the instructions are clear; and the variety is outstanding. I've had this book in my hands for about 5 hours and have looked at it, cover to cover. I'm unable to decide which to make first (it WILL have chocolate in it) but I'm sure I've already gained five pounds in anticipation.

3Fun cookie bookOct 15, 2009
The organization, pictures, and ideas are great. The writing and instructions are simple and easy to follow.I love that there are a huge variety of cookies, so if you're someone who likes to experiment and try something new this is perfect. I saw a lot of cookies I'd never even heard of or thought of making, so my housemates and I always have fun trying a new one every week.

My only objection is that the cookies actually aren't very tasty. A lot of them are floury, or a little bland, or sometimes too chocolatey. I don't really know what it is, but most cookies I've tried comes up short somehow. For example, the Lime Meltaways aren't quite lime-y enough, though you can easily adjust by putting in more zest or juice next time. Even simple cookies, like chocolate chip or oatmeal, aren't as good as the ones based on recipes from Joy of Cooking or Betty Crocker. My friend thinks it might be because she doesn't use enough butter and sugar, but I'm not totally sure. There's a food blog out there that tries every single recipe in this cookie book - I can't recall the name of it, but the blogger seemed to also be dissatisfied by some of the recipes too.

This cookbook is definitely best for holidays where you'd want to serve a huge variety of cookies and have fun with decor or impressing your friends. But if these cookies were sold at a bakery, I might not be a returning customer. They're not bad, just not good enough.

4so far it's so soOct 08, 2009
I've only baked three of the cookie recipes. Loved one, liked one and I changed up the third a lot. Still, I'm a newbie baker and learning a lot about baking cookies. Something I've never done before.
